AL & NL Rookie of the Year Prediction

Everyone is calling 2010 the year of the pitcher. However, 2010 could also be known as the year of the rookies. Out of MLB.com's top 10 prospects of 2010, all but one player lost rookie eligibility. In fact of the top 15 only 3 did not lose eligibility. This leaves us with a whole new group of prospects to look at as possible candidates for the American and National League Rookies of the Year.

AL candidates:

Mike Moustakas - .322/.369/.630 - 94 R, 36 HR, 124 RBI, 2 SB
Jeremy Hellickson - 119.1 IP, 2.72 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 127 K, 9.6 K/9
J.P. Arencibia - .301/.359/.626 - 76 R, 32 HR, 85 RBI
Desmond Jennings - .278/.362/.393 - 82 R, 3 HR, 36 RBI, 37 SB
Jesus Montero - .289/.353/.517 - 66 R, 21 HR, 75 RBI

Winner:
Moustakas, also know as Moose, is my candidate to win the AL ROY. Moose was the second overall pick in 2007, never quite living up to his full potential. However, in 2010 he finally put it all together at two different levels. Moustakas started the season at Northwest Arkansas (AA) and finished the season at Omaha (AAA). He has set himself up to take over the start 3B job for the Royals. Currently, Wilson Betemit will start the season as the Royals 3B. However, if Moose hits the way he did last year he will force the hand of the organization. Add in the fact that Betemit is not much of a road block for Moose and he should get called up as soon he will not lose a year of eligibility.

Runner Up:

Jeremy Hellickson: One of the best pitching prospects in the game. Should put up good numbers, but is in the offensive heavy American League East. Will be an ace in the future, but might struggle at times.

3rd Place:

J.P. Arencibia: A good hitting catcher who should get a good amount of playing time. If he hits like he did last year he could easily be the AL ROY. He will hit in the Blue Jays line up that lead the majors in home runs last year.

4th Place:

Desmond Jennings: Jennings is a potential 5-tool player. His best tool is his speed, but has the potential to hit for a solid average and 15-18 home runs. Depending on when Damon or ManRam gets hurt, Jennings should lock down the starting job. If he plays to his potential he could force the Rays to act sooner.

5th Place:

Jesus Montero: If Montero gets the playing time we could be talking about the AL ROY. One of the best position prospects in the game, Montero did not hit as well as scouts thought last year, however, he was a 20 year old at AAA and he will still only be 21 during next season.

 NL Candidates:

Freddie Freeman - .319/.378/.521 - 73 R, 18 HR, 87 RBI, 6 SB
Aroldis Chapman - 95.2 IP, 3.57 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 125 K, 11.8 K/9
Domonic Brown - .327/.391/.589 - 65 R, 20 HR, 68 RBI, 17 SB
Craig Kimbrel - 55.2 IP, 1.62 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 83 K, 13.4
Brandon Belt - .357/.455/.620 - 99 R, 23 HR, 112 RBI, 22 SB
